Reflection to "Attractive things work better"
Chapter 1: Attractive Things Work Better
So far emotion is still an ill-explored part in educational design. However, I indeed agree with the author that emotion plays a critical role in daily lives. Attractive things always make people happy. When a watch look beautiful and seems “well-designed” in the appearance, people usually believe that it must be better than the “ugly” ones. Nevertheless, as far as I mentioned in my post before, the definition of beauty could be different in different cultures. Web-based environment is a world-wide environment. The design of the web site should have its own style and be accepted by people from the world. How to design it in a proper way is still a problem for me.

It all boils down to psychology-the way our mind works, perceive, react, think, and feel. In terms of what is considered attractive is always a debatable issue. I do agree that what is considered attractive and beautiful will always be the winning factor over what is ugly.
You are absolutely correct is your reponse. Building a successful website is not as easy as it appears on the browser. There are a lot of psychological factors that are involved for people.

i like your comment about cultural bias though. i think it's interesting to delve more deeply into who thinks what is beautiful and why. and this whole discussion, i would assume, would end up leading us to the answer that not everyone is going to like what we design ever. that is why it's always so important to consider our audience.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, is it not? Therefore, I wouldn't concentrate so much on what I perceive as attractive but more on what would be appropriate for what I'm trying to convey. Do I want it to e professional looking? Is it supposed to be geared towards kids? Is it medically -related? The beauty of these three different kinds of sites must be judged within their genre and not against one another.

Aethetics are important in web design, but I think that if the information is clear, and is easily communicated in different cultural contexts is the most important aspect. Appearance is nice, but if the language is difficult to understand, then your work has gone in vain. I'm sure you won't have a problem with this if you take some time and view websites in different languages. Try Yahoo!, they have a wonderful site of course, but look at the bottom and check out the links to change the language. See what things have changed and how you can incorporate those things into your design. =)

These comments really make me think about sites needing to be attractive for worldwide audiences. One great thing about the Web is it makes our huge world seem a little smaller, I think. We easily have access to information all over the world. An interesting question is wheither the content can be designed to be understood by this worldwide audience. I'd be interested to know how a company like Yahoo designs their multiple language sites. Do they just do a direct translation into other languages or do they consider cultural factors that may influence how things are layed out or presented differently for some languages.
